Mobile tyre fitting van in Auckland
A van that fits and balances online-bought tyres at the customer's home or workplace across Auckland.
Kill Do not build this as described. The problems are structural, not fixable with effort.
This idea should not be built as described. Auckland is already served by several mobile fitters at very low prices, and the pitch does not explain where an independent fitter's jobs would come from. Test first whether any online seller or fleet will commit to sending you paid fitting work at a rate above about $20 a tyre.
Why the numbers land here. The score is low mainly because Auckland already has at least five mobile fitters advertising $19.99–$24.99 a tyre, and the big online sellers bundle fitting themselves, so the pitch has no clear wedge or source of jobs. Market data is conflicting, no NZ costs or rules were verified, and about $80–$100 labour per four-tyre job leaves thin room for van and running costs.
Red flags
- Five or more Auckland rivals already offer mobile fitting at $19.99–$24.99 a tyre, including disposal, so the founder would have to match prices that leave very thin margins.
- The pitch has no clear source of jobs. Online sellers such as Hyper Drive and Tony's already include their own mobile fitting, so tyres bought online are not a pool of customers waiting for an independent fitter.
- Fitting labour of roughly $80–$100 for four tyres has to cover the van, fuel, insurance, kit, used-tyre handling and Auckland driving time. No NZ cost data exists to show that it does.
- The market evidence is weak and conflicting. IBISWorld shows NZ tyre retailing shrinking, other reports show growth, and none of them measures mobile fitting.
- Competitors are moving toward mobile service and lower prices, so the gap is closing, not opening.
- Several UK mobile tyre firms have entered insolvency. The records give no causes, but there is no NZ success story to set against them.
The eight dimensions
Going to a tyre shop is a hassle, but it is a mild one that people already solve with shops or existing mobile vans. I found no Auckland search or complaint data showing strong pain, so the demand claim is untested.
- At least five Auckland businesses already offer mobile fitting, which suggests some demand but not how much [20][23][24][27][35]
- No Google Trends, keyword or NZ forum complaint data was found
Market reports disagree on both size and direction, and none of them counts mobile fitting. The one source that excludes online-only sellers shows tyre retailing shrinking.
- IBISWorld puts NZ tyre retailing at $1.1bn in 2025, down 1.5% in 2025 and shrinking about 0.4% a year since 2020 [2][10]
- TechSci says USD 922.75m in 2024, growing 4.81% a year to 2030 [4]
- Astute Analytica says USD 800.24m in 2024, growing 4.40% a year to 2033, but its detailed local stats could not be checked [5]
Auckland already has a national chain, an online seller with 250+ fitting locations, a Tyrepower mobile service and several small operators. Advertised prices of $19.99–$24.99 a tyre leave very little room for a new entrant to undercut anyone.
- Tony's vans cover Greater Auckland 6 days a week and offer to beat any quote by $10 a tyre [23]
- Hyper Drive offers mobile fitting, balancing and disposal from $24.99 a tyre, with 4.9/5 from 633 reviews [20][34]
- Hyper Tyres advertises mobile fitting from $19.99 a tyre [24]
- Albany Tyres offers mobile fitting across Auckland metro with no call-out fee [27]
- Tyrepower runs a mobile service [29] and TyreTire offers 24/7 mobile fitting [35]
Nothing recent favours a new mobile fitter. The stewardship scheme only changes how disposal works, and competitors are adding mobile service and cutting prices.
- The tyre stewardship fee began 1 March 2024 and the scheme was fully operational from 1 September 2024; it changes disposal, not demand
- Tyrepower says it is rolling mobile service out across Auckland, and Albany Tyres has added mobile fitting to its workshop [27][29]
A van and kit are within reach for a founder with some savings, and the work is not complex. But NZ van, equipment and insurance costs, WorkSafe rules, council rules and the used-tyre collection process are all unchecked.
- UK guides put a basic setup at about £10,000 and one forum user reports nearly £25,000 (UK figures only, not NZ)
- Under the stewardship rules a mobile fitter must handle used-tyre collection and storage; how this works for a van is unverified
At the advertised $19.99–$24.99 a tyre, a four-tyre job brings in roughly $80–$100 of labour, before van, fuel, insurance and time lost in Auckland traffic. Selling the tyres could add margin, but wholesale terms are unverified.
- $80–$100 for four tyres is my arithmetic from competitors' advertised per-tyre prices [20][24]
- No NZ wholesale, van, insurance or fuel cost data was found
Nothing in the pitch says whether the founder has tyre-fitting skills, a trade network or customers lined up. This is unverified, so it is scored neutral.
Unverified: no source found for this dimension.
The pitch relies on tyres bought online, but the big online sellers bundle their own mobile fitting, so a third-party fitter has no guaranteed flow of jobs. Overseas, several mobile tyre firms have failed and communication and booking problems are common complaints.
- Hyper Drive and Tony's both bundle their own mobile fitting with tyre sales [20][23]
- Mobile Tyre Team Ltd and Event Mobile Tyres Ltd (UK) both have insolvency records, with no causes given [11][12]
- A UK forum post complains that a booked fitting window slipped [14]
Competitors named in the check
- Tony's Tyre & Auto Care (mobile vans) Vans across Greater Auckland, 6 days a week. Beat-any-quote-by-$10-a-tyre promise. Says it has 35+ stores nationwide and has been supplying tyres since 1982.
- Hyper Drive Online seller with mobile fitting at home or work in Auckland, from $24.99 a tyre including balancing and disposal. 4.9/5 from 633 reviews. Says it has 250+ installation locations.
- Hyper Tyres Auckland mobile fitting from $19.99 a tyre. Link to Hyper Drive unconfirmed.
- Albany Tyres and Alignment Mobile fitting across Auckland metro, including EV and light-commercial tyres. No call-out fee. Says it has served Auckland for over 30 years.
- Otahuhu Tyrepower mobile service Mobile fitting and puncture repair, CBD to Manukau. Says it is gradually rolling out across Auckland. Prices not shown.
- TyreTire Small operator offering 24/7 mobile fitting and puncture repair. Prices not shown.
- Magness Tyre Service Lists a mobile tyre fitting service in Auckland. I have not seen its prices or scale.
Market
No Auckland search volume, keyword or complaint data was found, so demand for mobile fitting is unverified. The only signal is that at least five Auckland businesses already offer it. One mobile fitting product has 633 reviews at 4.9/5, which shows customers use and like the service [34].
The NZ tyre market is reported at $1.1bn (IBISWorld, retail, NZD, 2025) [2] or about USD 800–920m (other reports) [4][5]. None of these figures counts mobile fitting. The share of Auckland tyre buyers who would choose mobile fitting is unknown, so I cannot give a reliable SAM or SOM. At roughly $80–$100 labour per four-tyre job, the founder would need a steady stream of jobs just to keep one van busy.

Costs and money

Fitting and balancing fee per tyre, with a possible margin if the founder also supplies the tyres.
USD. These are rough conversions of UK figures (about £10,000 for a basic second-hand van setup, up to about £25,000 on a forum report), not NZ quotes. Monthly cost is my assumption for van finance or running costs, insurance, fuel and phone. NZ van prices, equipment import costs, insurance and tyre stock or wholesale terms were not found. Selling tyres as well would need extra working capital.
Price point: Competitors advertise $19.99–$24.99 a tyre including balancing and disposal [20][24]. A four-tyre job is roughly $80–$100 in labour at those prices.
Unit economics: Unknown. Labour of $80–$100 per four-tyre job has to cover fuel, van, kit, insurance, used-tyre handling and travel time. The number of jobs a van can complete per day in Auckland traffic is not verified. Tyre resale margin depends on wholesale terms, which were not found.
Kill criteria
| Risk | Cheap test | Kill it if |
|---|---|---|
| No reliable source of jobs for an independent fitter | Contact 8–10 Auckland online tyre sellers, tyre shops and fleet operators and ask whether they would subcontract mobile fitting, at what price per tyre and at what weekly volume. | Fewer than two will commit to subcontract work, or the best offered rate is below about $20 a tyre all-in. |
| Unit economics do not cover van and running costs | Get written NZ quotes for a van, tyre machine and balancer, insurance and wheel-handling gear. Model profit per job at $80–$100 labour, with 3 to 5 jobs a day as the test range. | Payback on the startup cost is longer than 18 months at the realistic job volume, or monthly profit does not cover the founder's minimum income. |
| Auckland customers will not pay more than the $19.99–$24.99 advertised | Run a simple landing page and $300–$500 of local ads offering mobile fitting for customer-supplied tyres at your intended price. Count booking requests. | Fewer than 10 genuine booking requests from the ad spend, or most enquirers say a cheaper price is available elsewhere. |
| Rules and used-tyre handling add cost or block the model | Ask Tyrewise, WorkSafe, Auckland Council and an insurer in writing about used-tyre collection from a van, tyre inflation safety rules, roadside working and cover. | Any requirement adds a recurring cost or licence you cannot meet, or an insurer will not cover mobile tyre work at an affordable premium. |
30-day plan
| Task | The number that says it worked | |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Get written NZ quotes for a van, tyre changer, balancer and compressor, and an insurance quote for mobile tyre work. Ask Tyrewise, WorkSafe and Auckland Council about used-tyre collection, tyre inflation safety and roadside working. | At least 3 equipment quotes, 2 insurance quotes and written answers on the rules, with a single startup cost figure. |
| Week 2 | Contact 8–10 online tyre sellers, tyre shops, fleet operators and wholesalers about subcontracting or supplying tyres, and ask what they pay per tyre and what weekly volume they could send. | Number of firms offering a rate and volume; target at least 2 commitments at $20 or more a tyre. |
| Weeks 3 and 4 are in the owner’s report. Check your own version of this idea to get the full plan. | ||
What would change the verdict
- An online seller or fleet operator commits in writing to send a steady weekly volume of fitting jobs at a rate above about $25 a tyre.
- NZ quotes show a fully equipped van costs at or below the low end of the UK range, with affordable insurance.
- Auckland search data shows strong, growing demand for mobile tyre fitting with long waits or complaints about existing providers.
- A Tyrewise or wholesaler arrangement makes used-tyre collection free and simple for a van operator.
