Memory Loss Password Recovery
Shamir secret sharing solution for emergency account access recovery.
eljojo.github.io
What it does
ReMemory encrypts files and divides the decryption key among trusted people using Shamir's Secret Sharing. A user specifies how many of those people must collaborate to unlock the files—for example, three out of five friends. The encrypted files stay on the user's device. Each trusted person receives a self-contained recovery bundle (a ZIP file with an offline-capable browser tool) that holds their piece of the key. When enough pieces are combined, the files decrypt.
Who it is for
The tool targets people concerned about digital access in case of incapacity, memory loss, or death. The founder built it after cycling concussions raised questions about what would happen to personal digital data if memory failed. It appeals to users who want to avoid single points of failure—neither entrusting everything to one person nor relying on a third-party service. It also serves those who want recovery to work even if ReMemory's website disappears.

How it stands out
ReMemory is designed to work entirely offline, in any browser, with no accounts or servers. Encryption uses age, a modern cryptographic tool. The code is open source under Apache-2.0. Recovery bundles are self-contained—if the ReMemory website vanishes, recovery still functions. The tool can also be self-hosted via Docker. Users control the threshold: three of five, two of two, or any combination. No single person can access anything alone.
What a founder should check
A rival builder should verify three things. First, whether the incumbent solution is really scattered across password managers, email backups, and informal agreements with family—or if organized competitors already exist in the "digital legacy" and emergency access space. Second, what switching costs matter: how much friction exists around setting up shares with multiple people, and how psychologically difficult it is to distribute encryption keys to family members. Third, the long-term viability moat—whether the advantage comes from being first to market, from trust in open source code and cryptography choice, or from network effects among the people holding shares.
