What it does
Ahrefs publishes free versions of its keyword generator, keyword difficulty checker and traffic checker. They return a slice of the full data: enough to see monthly search volume for a term in a country.
Using it to validate
Turn the problem into five search phrases, note volumes for the country in the pitch, and sum them. A few hundred searches a month for a local service can be plenty; a few hundred for a global software idea is a red flag.
