Garden maintenance subscription for seniors in Dublin
Monthly garden care plan with one named gardener, sold to homeowners aged 65+ in south Dublin and their adult children.
Pivot Not as described. The core has something, the shape or the market does not.
This should not be built as pitched: it is a crowded market with a wedge already claimed by The Happy Beaver and thin margins at going prices. The main reason is that there is no evidence over-65s or their families will pay a premium for a named gardener, while cheaper rivals are everywhere. Test first whether adult children will pay €130-€170 per month for a vetted, named gardener, using leaflets and a paid trial visit.
Why the numbers land here. The need and the ageing population are real, but competition is heavy, the 'same gardener' wedge is already claimed, and the numbers leave thin margins against €90-€170 plans. Nothing shows older homeowners in south Dublin will pay a premium, so the score sits below the build line.
Red flags
- The 'same gardener each visit' wedge is already claimed in The Happy Beaver's marketing, so it is not unique unless backed by something customers can check.
- Plans at €90-€110 per month already exist in Dublin. At those prices a business paying staff has almost no margin.
- No evidence of what over-65s in south Dublin will pay. All price data is general-population pricing.
- Many older homeowners are asset-rich but income-poor (an inference, no data found), which limits spending on a plan.
- Cheap sole-trader gardeners are likely the real competitor, and their prices and numbers are unverified.
- Hedge cutting is banned from 1 March to 31 August under the Wildlife Act, which opens a seasonal revenue gap. A September 2025 guidance note may ease this for gardens, but it comes from a secondary source.
The eight dimensions
Older homeowners often cannot keep up a garden, and the need is real. But the evidence shows need, not proof that they or their families will pay a monthly fee, and cheap gardeners and charities already fill the gap.
- 83.4% of people aged 65+ own the home they live in, so most are responsible for their own garden [12]
- 8,261 people aged 65+ live alone in South Dublin county and 9,734 in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown [20]
- Charity garden services for older people exist elsewhere, such as HomeLife in Meath. This suggests the need is real enough for subsidised help, but it also shows free or cheap alternatives exist.
The 65+ population in the two southern counties is about 76,500 and growing, which gives a reachable segment. A fifth of the target group has no internet, and I found no search volume or price data for this niche.
- South Dublin county has 38,620 people aged 65+ and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown has 37,875 [20]
- Over-65 population grew 21.8% nationally between 2016 and 2022 [12]
- 20% of dwellings headed by someone 65+ have no internet connection, and almost 34% of those living alone [16]
Dublin already has many firms selling monthly plans with direct debit, and The Happy Beaver already promises the same gardeners on a regular schedule. Sole-trader gardeners undercut all of them. The founder's wedge is not unique.
- The Happy Beaver sells monthly plans from about €172 and promises the same gardeners on a regular schedule [5]
- The House Gardeners sells a €90 per month plan covering 2 visits of 2 hours [8]
- gardening.dublin.services lists maintenance from €110 per month [9]
- Mr Kerb Appeal lists a fortnightly plan from €87 per visit [3]
The 65+ and living-alone populations jumped between census years, and customers are now used to monthly plans paid by direct debit. No new grant or regulation specific to senior garden care was found.
- Number of over-65s living alone has risen sharply since the last census [11]
- 65+ population in South Dublin county up 33% on 2016 for those living alone [20]
A gardener-founder can launch with a van, tools and insurance for modest money. The hard parts are building trust with older customers, covering vetting and insurance, and keeping routes tight enough to fit short visits. If the founder is not a gardener, hiring makes it much harder.
- Sole trader registration in Ireland is free via Revenue [no source number available]
- Employee gardener pay in Dublin is reported at about €20 an hour [31], though Payscale shows about €13.99 an hour [37]
Market plans run from €90 to €446 per month, but the cheap end leaves almost no margin if you pay staff. At roughly 4 hours a month per customer, a lone founder tops out at about 25-30 customers and a modest income. There is no evidence that seniors will pay a premium for continuity.
- The House Gardeners' €90 for 4 hours works out to about €22 an hour including VAT at 13.5% [8]
- Happy Beaver standard rate is €43 an hour with a 2-person-hour minimum [4]
- Typical Irish monthly maintenance plans are quoted at €100-€200+ [6]
- Gardener pay of about €20 an hour [31] leaves little margin before travel, fuel, waste disposal, insurance and PRSI
The pitch says nothing about the founder's gardening skill, local network or time, so fit cannot be judged. This stays at a neutral score until we know whether the founder is the gardener.

No single killer, but several real exposures. Hedge-cutting is restricted from 1 March to 31 August, which creates a seasonal gap. Insurance and vetting expectations are unverified. A rogue-trader image problem makes trust hard to earn with seniors.

Competitors named in the check
- The Happy Beaver Monthly plans by direct debit from about €172. Headline promise is the same gardeners on a regular schedule. This is the founder's wedge.
- Mr Kerb Appeal Fortnightly plan from €87 per visit and monthly €170 for 4 hours. The price snapshot is old, so current prices are likely higher.
- The House Gardeners Annual plan at €90 per month for 2 visits of 2 hours, about €22 an hour. Sets a low price anchor.
- gardening.dublin.services Maintenance from €110 per month. May be a lead-generation site, which is unverified.
- Lion Paving & Landscaping Says 8+ years in North and South Dublin and Kildare. General maintenance at €80-€150 per visit.
- Age Action Care & Repair Charity odd-jobs service for older people. Current Dublin scope and whether gardening is included are unconfirmed.
- Sole-trader gardeners Likely the main real competitor and cheaper than any plan above. Number and prices in south Dublin are unverified.
Market
Need is visible in the numbers: about 76,500 people aged 65+ in South Dublin and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown counties, of whom about 18,000 live alone [20]. Dublin firms advertise monthly plans widely. No search volume, forum complaints or willingness-to-pay data was found.
Total: 65+ population of roughly 76,500 in the two southern counties [20]. Reachable: owners with a garden, 83.4% of 65+ own their home [12], but the share with a garden is unverified. Obtainable: a solo gardener serves about 25-30 customers at 4 hours a month. This is my assumption, not a sourced figure.
Growing
Costs and money
$3k to $15k
$700
Monthly subscription plan paid by direct debit, with a named gardener and a fixed visit schedule.
USD-equivalent estimates, not sourced from Irish quotes. Low end assumes an owner-operator with a used van and basic tools, leaflets and a first insurance payment. High end adds a newer van, better equipment and vetting costs. Monthly covers insurance, fuel, van, waste disposal, direct-debit fees and marketing. Employee labour, employer PRSI and VAT registration are extra if you hire.
Price point: About €130-€170 per month for around 4 hours of work, in line with the market range of €100-€200+ per month [6].
Unit economics: At €150 per month for 4 hours, revenue is about €37 an hour. Paid labour at €20 an hour [31] leaves about €17 an hour before travel, fuel, green waste, insurance, PRSI and direct-debit fees. This is my arithmetic, not a sourced result. It works if the founder does the work and routes are tight. It is thin if you hire. Customer acquisition cost is unknown.
Kill criteria
| Risk | Cheap test | Kill it if |
|---|---|---|
| Seniors or their families will not pay a premium for a named gardener | Deliver 300 leaflets in two south Dublin estates, post in two local Facebook groups, and ask 10 adult children of older homeowners if they would pay €130-€170 per month. Offer a paid trial first visit. | Fewer than 5 paid trial bookings from the leaflets and 10 conversations, or fewer than 3 of the 10 families say yes at a price above €120 per month. |
| Margin disappears against cheap rivals and travel time | Plan a sample week of 8-10 visits in one area. Time every visit and drive. Cost labour at €20 an hour plus fuel, waste and insurance quotes from two Irish insurers. | Gross margin after all costs is below 30% at a price of €150 per month, or billable time falls below 70% of the working day. |
| Trust and vetting requirements block sales | Phone 5 adult children or older homeowners and ask what they need to hire someone: vetting, ID, insurance, references. Check with an Irish insurer and Garda vetting body what is required. | Vetting and cover cost more than €500 upfront, or 4 of 5 people say they would only use a charity or an established firm. |
30-day plan
| Task | The number that says it worked | |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Interview 10 adult children and 5 over-65 homeowners in south Dublin about what they pay now, who they trust, and whether vetting, ID and insurance matter. Get two insurance quotes. | 15 conversations done, 2 insurance quotes, and a clear list of what customers say they would pay for. |
| Week 2 | Print 300 leaflets for two or three estates and post in two local groups, offering a paid first-visit trial at a fixed price. Phone 5 local sole-trader gardeners to learn their prices. | At least 5 enquiries and 3 paid trial bookings. |
| Weeks 3 and 4 are in the owner’s report. Check your own version of this idea to get the full plan. | ||
What would change the verdict
- Evidence that adult children in south Dublin will pay €150+ per month for a vetted, named gardener with visit updates.
- A Dublin partnership with an organisation such as a parish, active retirement group or home-care firm that brings steady, referred customers.
- Founder is a trained gardener who can do all the work themselves, keeping labour cost near zero.
- Finding that sole-trader gardeners in south Dublin charge well above the €90-€110 plans and few offer insurance or regular schedules.
