Reusable packaging service for Istanbul restaurants
Returnable takeaway containers with collection and washing, charged per cycle to restaurants in Kadıköy, Istanbul.
Kill Do not build this as described. The problems are structural, not fixable with effort.
As described, this should not be built yet: the demand is untested, the costs are unknown and the rules are unchecked. The main reason is that restaurants have a cheap, easy alternative and one district gives little density for collection and returns. Test first whether 30 Kadıköy restaurants would sign up for a paid pilot at a price above your measured cost per cycle.
Why the numbers land here. The score is low because the product competes with a very cheap disposable box, the costs and rules in Turkey are unknown, and a single district makes returns and route density hard. The timing helps a little, but plastic-ban drafts are not confirmed and could push restaurants to paper instead.
Red flags
- The disposable box a restaurant buys now is very cheap and easy to get, so the service must beat a price we could not find.
- No Turkish price, wash cost, labour cost or container cost data was found, so the unit economics are unproven.
- Return rate decides profit. One lost container costs many cycles of margin, and tracking has to be built or licensed.
- One district is a thin base. Foreign systems depend on returns to any participating outlet.
- Turkish hygiene rules for reused food containers were not checked, and the answer could stop the whole idea.
- It is unclear if delivery platforms such as Yemeksepeti allow returnable containers, and much takeaway goes through them.
The eight dimensions
Restaurants buy cheap disposable boxes and do not feel much pain from them today. The pressure comes from possible rules, and those are still drafts. The founder's demand claim is untested.
- Turkish makers and wholesalers sell takeaway boxes widely, so the current fix is easy and cheap to buy [1][4][6][8]
- A draft regulation to restrict single-use plastics exists, but it is not confirmed as in force [35]
There is no size figure for Istanbul or Kadıköy takeaway volume and no Turkish search data. Consumers responded to a bag fee, but that does not show restaurants will pay for reuse.
- Plastic bag use per person reportedly fell sharply after the 2019 fee, so Turkish consumers respond to small charges [32]
- A Finnish survey found 65% of consumers interested in trying reusable takeaway containers, but that is Europe and stated interest only [19]
No Turkish reusable-container operator was found, but that may mean nobody has made it work. The real rival is the very cheap disposable box, plus well-funded foreign operators that could enter later.
- Only disposable-packaging suppliers turned up in Turkish searches [1][4][6][8]
- Vytal raised about $15.5M and claims a 99.2% return rate [13][23]
Turkey has a circular economy plan and a draft single-use plastics ban. Both help, but drafts have no confirmed start dates. A ban could also push restaurants to cheap paper boxes instead of reuse.
- Draft regulation on single-use plastics exists [35]
- Packaging Waste Control Regulation of 2021 covers all packaging placed on the market, including non-returnable [29]
The founder needs a wash site, industrial washing, containers, vehicles and tracking before the first paying cycle. Hygiene rules for reused food containers are unchecked. A single district cannot easily build the density foreign operators rely on.
- Every foreign operator found uses app or QR tracking, which the pitch does not mention [13][17]
- Foreign operators describe a network where customers return containers to any participating outlet [11][12]
Foreign per-cycle fees are small and the container must survive many cycles, wash and transport are extra costs, and losses erase margin. We cannot tell if Turkish restaurants would pay more than their current box cost.
- Vytal pricing is about 300 euros per 500 uses, roughly 0.60 euros per use by arithmetic [12]
- reCIRCLE charges 13.5 cents per container rental, with a 10 euro deposit per box [12]
- Vytal says its bowl can be used at least 200 times [17]
- Reusables.com's own example puts a single-use item at $0.30 and a reusable at $0.24 per use, but this is vendor marketing [18]
No founder background was given, so skills in logistics, food safety or restaurant sales cannot be judged. The idea needs all three, and a Kadıköy base is a small plus.
Unverified: no source found for this dimension.
Several single points of failure exist: hygiene approval for reused containers, unclear packaging fees on returnable containers, delivery platform rules, and return rates. Any one of them could end the idea.
- Muuse said 2020 was not ideal because cafés closed and people feared reusables could carry Covid [22]
- Hygiene rules, packaging registration and the recycling fee (GEKAP) treatment of reusables were not confirmed [29][32]
Competitors named in the check
- Vytal (Germany) Funded B2B reuse system with app tracking, claims a 99.2% return rate. Restaurants pay about 0.60 euros per use on a 2023-era comparison, customers pay nothing if they return within 14 days.
- reCIRCLE (Switzerland) Rental of 13.5 cents per container plus VAT, with customer deposits of 10 euros per box.
- Muuse (Asia, San Francisco) B2B flat monthly fee, free for customers, claims a 98% return rate. Struggled in 2020 but still operates.
- Reusables.com (US) Sells reusable packaging plans. Its own worked example is vendor marketing, not an audit.
- Ozzi (US) Smart drop-off machines used in closed settings such as colleges and healthcare.
- Turkish disposable box makers (for example mbpak, uchampak) The real incumbent. Cheap boxes sold in volume. No prices found.
Market
No Turkish demand data found: no search volumes, no restaurant complaints, no Kadıköy takeaway counts. Turkey used 709,348 tonnes of single-use plastic in 2022, including 63,000 tonnes of food containers, but that is national waste, not demand for a reuse service. Consumers cut bag use after a fee in 2019 [32].
Unknown. A bottom-up size would need the number of Kadıköy takeaway restaurants, orders per day and the share that would switch. None of these was found, so no TAM, SAM or SOM is given.

Costs and money
$0 to $0
$0
Per-cycle fee charged to the restaurant, possibly with a customer deposit; foreign operators also use monthly plans.
USD. Set to 0 because no Turkish data was found for containers, wash equipment, wash site rent, vehicles, labour or tracking software. Do not read as free. Build your own quote for each of these items before spending anything.
Price point: Foreign reference points only: about 0.14 to 0.60 euros per cycle. A Turkish price that beats the restaurant's disposable box cost is not known.
Unit economics: Revenue per container life is its cycles times the per-cycle fee. By arithmetic, a 200-use container at 0.14 to 0.60 euros earns about 28 to 120 euros before wash, transport, tracking and losses. These numbers are foreign and must be replaced with Turkish costs. Profit swings on return rate and on reaching enough daily volume to fill collection routes.
Kill criteria
| Risk | Cheap test | Kill it if |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurants will not pay more than their current disposable box cost. | Interview 30 Kadıköy restaurants that do takeaway. Ask what they pay per box today and offer a written per-cycle price. Ask for a signed intent to pilot. | Fewer than 5 of 30 agree to a paid pilot, or the typical box cost is below the per-cycle price needed to cover wash, transport and losses. |
| Turkish food hygiene rules block or heavily burden reused takeaway containers. | Ask the local food-control authority and a food-safety consultant in writing what approval a central wash site and reused food-contact containers need. | The answer is that reused containers cannot be sold for takeaway, or approval would cost more than the first-year revenue forecast. |
| Delivery apps do not allow returnable packaging, which shuts out much of the takeaway volume. | Check delivery-platform packaging rules and ask 10 restaurants what share of orders go through apps versus direct or walk-in. | More than 70% of takeaway orders go through platforms that refuse returnable containers. |
| Wash and logistics costs per cycle are higher than what restaurants will pay. | Buy or borrow 200 containers, hand-wash and collect them from 3 friendly restaurants for two weeks, and time and cost every step. | Fully loaded cost per cycle, including labour, transport, water, detergent and losses, exceeds the price restaurants accepted in the interviews. |
30-day plan
| Task | The number that says it worked | |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Visit or call 30 Kadıköy takeaway restaurants. Record box cost per order, daily takeaway volume, delivery app share and their reaction to a per-cycle price. | 30 interviews done, box cost known for at least 20, and at least 8 say they would try a pilot |
| Week 2 | Get written answers on hygiene rules and packaging fees for reused containers, and check delivery platform packaging terms. | One written answer from the food-control authority and a clear yes or no on platform rules |
| Weeks 3 and 4 are in the owner’s report. Check your own version of this idea to get the full plan. | ||
What would change the verdict
- A confirmed Turkish ban on single-use food containers with a firm start date and no cheap paper loophole.
- Turkish disposable box prices turning out high enough that a per-cycle fee clearly undercuts them.
- Written confirmation that reused food containers need only simple approval and no extra packaging fees.
- A delivery platform or restaurant group agreeing to a paid pilot with guaranteed volume.
