Second-hand kids clothing subscription in Stockholm
A 299 SEK/month rotating box of used kids clothes, sized and swapped each season, for Stockholm parents.
Kill Do not build this as described. The problems are structural, not fixable with effort.
This idea does not look worth building as described. The main reason is that rivals exist and the price is too low for the handling work each swap needs. Test first whether 10 hand-built boxes can be delivered and returned for well under 299 SEK a month, and whether Stockholm parents will put down a deposit.
Why the numbers land here. The model is already offered by at least three Swedish rivals at higher prices, and parents can cover the same need with cheap used items or free hand-me-downs. The 299 SEK price must cover washing, inspection and two-way shipping, which are unverified and likely too costly.
Red flags
- Three or more Swedish rivals already sell this model, and the one with the most customer evidence (Hyber) has been around since at least 2018.
- Your 299 SEK price is lower than every verified rival price, but parents can already buy single used items for 40-199 SEK or get them free.
- Shipping and handling cost per swap was not verified and is likely to eat most of 299 SEK.
- The only parent voice found says she buys 90% second-hand and would not clearly save money with a subscription (one 2018 anecdote, so treat as a claim to test).
- Kids change size on a fixed schedule, so customers leave when a stage ends. Churn is built in and unverified.
- Every garment must be washed and inspected after each swap; quality failures hit trust fast.
The eight dimensions
Kids outgrow clothes fast, but parents already solve this cheaply with Vinted, Tradera, loppisar and hand-me-downs. The only pain evidence is one 2018 blogger who buys about 90% second-hand and doubted rental was cheaper.
- A parent blogger paid 399 SEK/month for Hyber's top plan, said it may not beat buying second-hand, and wanted a ~200 SEK plan with less perfect clothes (2018, one anecdote) [22]
- Single second-hand kids items in Stockholm sell for 40-199 SEK [24]
- Inimini pays only 30 SEK per kg for used kids clothes, so the garments are worth little [23]
Second-hand buying is mainstream in Sweden, but no figure for Stockholm kids second-hand spend or subscription demand was verified. The reachable group is parents of 0-5 year olds who want a subscription, and its size is unknown.
- Headline-level reports say second-hand buying in Sweden has grown fast; the figures were not read [12]
At least three Swedish subscription or rental services already do this, plus cheap piece-by-piece markets and free hand-me-downs. Your wedge is a lower price, and a low price is a weak wedge.
- Hyber rents kids clothes from newborn to age 10 with free size and season swaps, and has existed since at least 2018 [20]
- Paris & Billy offers a used-clothes tier from 599 SEK/month and a reuse tier from 899 SEK/month [26]
- Hippat runs automatic size-based packages from newborn to age 5 [20]
- Vinted, Tradera, Sellpy and Tise are the usual places Swedes buy used kids clothes [16]
Second-hand and rental are more accepted than a few years ago. Textile rules in progress could help or hurt a reuse business, and I could not confirm which. Competitor status since 2024 is unverified.
- Headline-level reports say second-hand buying in Sweden has grown fast [12]
- Swedish and EU textile producer responsibility rules are in progress; details not read [38]
It can start small, but every swap needs sourcing, washing, inspection, sorting by size, storage and two-way shipping. That is a heavy operation to run by hand, and the pitch does not say who does it or with what funding.
- Stockholm laundry services exist (WashAway, Tvättdax, Tvättbisse), but prices for per-kilo washing were not read [6]
299 SEK per month has to cover the garments, washing, inspection, packaging, two-way shipping, storage, payment fees and acquisition, plus churn. Carrier prices were not verified, but two-way shipping alone is likely a large share of 299 SEK. Rivals charge 399 to 1,199 SEK for a similar service.
- Paris & Billy's cheapest used tier is 599 SEK/month, double your price [26]
- Hyber's most expensive plan quoted was 399 SEK/month, with most packages on a 12-month commitment [20]
The pitch says nothing about the founder's skills, network, time or capital. Logistics and operations experience would matter most here. Score is a neutral-low default.
Unverified: no source found for this dimension.
There is no single killer, but several unchecked issues: whether textile producer-responsibility rules apply to a reuse business, children's clothing safety and hygiene expectations, subscription cancellation rules, and heavy churn as kids change size.
- Swedish textile EPR rules are in progress; whether they apply to a reuse-only business was not confirmed [38]
Competitors named in the check
- Hyber Swedish kids clothing rental from newborn to age 10. Free size and season swaps, most packages on 12-month commitment. One blogger paid 399 SEK/month for her priciest plan. Current prices unverified.
- Hippat Subscription packages from newborn to age 5. The company picks items, auto-refills with growth, free return shipping. Price unverified.
- Paris & Billy 20-garment subscription with tiers from 599 SEK/month (used) up to 1,199 SEK/month (new organic). Cheapest used tier is double your price.
- Hygglo Peer-to-peer rental marketplace. Owners set prices. Not specific to kids clothes.
- Parently Rents prams, car seats and similar gear from 199 SEK. Competes for the same rent-instead-of-buy parent budget.
- Friends of Léon Stockholm second-hand kids shop. Items seen at 40, 99 and 199 SEK.
- Inimini Online second-hand kids clothes sold in matching bundles. Buys from households at 30 SEK/kg, but not in Stockholm.
- Vinted Main peer-to-peer marketplace where Swedish parents buy and sell used kids clothes.
Market
Second-hand buying in Sweden is reported as rising, but only headlines were read and no figure is verified. Search volume, forum complaints and subscription churn are unverified. The one parent voice found prefers cheaper, less perfect clothes.
No verified TAM, SAM or SOM. Rough logic only: Stockholm parents of children aged 0-5 are the reachable segment. Only the share who want a subscription and will pay 299 SEK/month counts. That share has not been measured.
Growing
Costs and money
$3k to $25k
$4k
Monthly subscription with seasonal size swaps, shipped or delivered in Stockholm.
USD. My rough assumptions, not verified figures: low end is a landing page, an initial stock of used garments and a test of 10 boxes done by hand from home. High end adds laundry, packaging, a small storage space and ads. Monthly is software, packaging, laundry, shipping and storage for a first few dozen subscribers. Carrier and laundry prices were not verified.
Price point: 299 SEK/month, below Hyber's top plan (399 SEK) and Paris & Billy's cheapest used tier (599 SEK).
Unit economics: Unverified. Each month must cover garment depreciation, washing, inspection, packaging, two-way shipping, storage, payment fees and customer acquisition. Shipping likely takes a large share of 299 SEK. Customers leave when the child changes stage, so lifetime is short.
Kill criteria
| Risk | Cheap test | Kill it if |
|---|---|---|
| Parents will not pay 299 SEK/month when single items cost 40-199 SEK or are free | Run a landing page and a small ad budget in Stockholm for a pre-order waitlist with a refundable deposit, and interview 15 parents of kids aged 0-5 about what they spend now. | Fewer than 20 deposits from 300 targeted clicks, or fewer than 5 of 15 parents say they would pay 299 SEK/month. |
| Cost per swap exceeds 299 SEK | Build 10 boxes by hand: source garments, wash, inspect, pack, ship both ways. Record every cost and every minute. | Cost per box per month (after spreading garment cost over expected swaps) exceeds about 200 SEK, leaving no margin for acquisition. |
| Rivals already serve this audience at a price parents accept | Check current Hyber, Hippat and Paris & Billy plans and prices, then ask 10 of their likely customers why they chose them. | Rival prices are at or below 299 SEK, or customers say price is not their reason for choosing and they are satisfied. |
| Textile or consumer rules make the model costly | Ask Swedish textile producer responsibility advisers and Konsumentverket whether a reuse subscription must register, pay fees or follow extra rules. | A registration or fee requirement applies that you cannot pay at your expected volume. |
30-day plan
| Task | The number that says it worked | |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Interview 15 Stockholm parents of kids aged 0-5 and check current Hyber, Hippat and Paris & Billy plans and prices. | At least 5 of 15 parents say they would pay 299 SEK/month; competitor prices recorded. |
| Week 2 | Hand-build 10 test boxes: source, wash, inspect, pack and ship both ways. Log every cost and minute. | Total cost per box per month is below 200 SEK. |
| Weeks 3 and 4 are in the owner’s report. Check your own version of this idea to get the full plan. | ||
What would change the verdict
- Hand-built boxes cost under about 120 SEK per month all-in, leaving margin at 299 SEK.
- Paid deposits show strong demand: 30 or more from 300 clicks.
- Rivals have closed or raised prices well above 399 SEK.
- A free or cheap supply of clean, good-quality clothes, for example from a daycare or parent-group partner.
